A keyboard

A keyboard is a primary input device used to enter text, characters, and commands into a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Modeled after the traditional typewriter, it consists of an arrangement of buttons (keys) that act as electronic switches. When you press a key, the keyboard sends a specific electrical signal to the computer, which translates it into a character on your screen or a specific action.

Because different users have different needs—from competitive gaming to heavy data entry—keyboards come in a wide variety of types. They are generally categorized by how their keys are built (the switches), their size, and their ergonomic design.

Here is a breakdown of the main types of keyboards available today:


1. By Switch Technology (How the keys work)

The "switch" is the mechanism underneath the keycap that registers your keystroke.

  • Membrane Keyboards: These are the most common and inexpensive keyboards. They use three layers of flexible plastic (membranes) with conductive traces. Pushing a key pushes the top membrane through a hole in the middle layer to touch the bottom layer, completing an electrical circuit.

    • Pros: Quiet, affordable, often spill-resistant.

    • Cons: "Mushy" feeling, less durable, lower lifespan per key.

  • Mechanical Keyboards: These feature a complete, individual, physical switch underneath every single key. They are highly favored by typists, programmers, and gamers.

    • Pros: Highly durable, distinct tactile feedback (you can feel when the key registers), highly customizable, available in "clicky," "tactile," or "linear" (smooth) variations.

    • Cons: Can be loud, heavier, and generally more expensive.

  • Scissor-Switch Keyboards: Commonly found on laptops and low-profile desktop keyboards (like the Apple Magic Keyboard). They use a rubber dome but add a plastic 'scissor' mechanism that links the keycap to a plunger.

    • Pros: Low profile, short travel distance, crisp typing feel compared to standard membranes.

    • Cons: Can be difficult to clean and fragile to repair.


2. By Form Factor and Size

Keyboards are sized based on the number of keys they include.

  • Full-Size (100%): Contains all standard keys (usually 104 or 105), including the main alphanumeric section, function row, navigation keys, and a dedicated numeric keypad on the right.

  • Tenkeyless (TKL / 80%): A full-size keyboard with the entire numeric keypad removed. This is popular for saving desk space and allowing the mouse to be placed closer to your hands.

  • Compact (60%, 65%, 75%): These ultra-portable keyboards strip away even more. A 60% keyboard removes the number pad, arrow keys, and the top function (F1-F12) row, relying on keyboard shortcuts to access those missing functions.


3. By Design and Specialty

  • Ergonomic Keyboards: Designed to minimize muscle strain and prevent repetitive strain injuries (RSI) like carpal tunnel syndrome. They often feature a split design (separating the keys for the left and right hands) and a curved or tented shape to keep your wrists in a natural, neutral position.

  • Gaming Keyboards: Typically mechanical keyboards optimized for gaming. They often feature customizable RGB lighting, programmable macro keys (to execute complex commands with one press), and "anti-ghosting" technology so multiple keys can be pressed simultaneously without errors.

  • Flexible/Roll-up Keyboards: Made of soft silicone, these can be rolled up for easy travel. They are highly resistant to water and dust, making them good for medical or industrial environments, though they offer a poor typing experience.
