IP Address and Domain Name

An IP address is a unique number used to identify a device on the Internet.

Two types:

IPv4

• 32-bit address
• Written in 4 number groups
• Example: 192.168.1.1

IPv6

• 128-bit address
• Written in longer groups separated by colons
• Created because more addresses are needed today

Domain Name

A domain name is the easy-to-read name of a website, such as:

• google.com
• uitm.edu.my

It is easier for people to remember than an IP address.
